What is scaffolding?

A scaffold is a temporary structure that provides safe access, work platforms and protection during construction, maintenance or restoration. Scaffolding distinguishes strictly by purpose: working scaffolds carry people and materials, protective scaffolds arrest falls and objects, and shoring (falsework) supports structural parts while a building takes shape.

The most flexible method is tube-and-clamp scaffolding (tube-and-coupler; German: Rohrgerüstbau): steel tubes joined by couplers, free in geometry, made to measure. It is the basis for the demanding work where standard system scaffolds stop — special, heavy-duty and art scaffolds.

History & people · since 1949

A craft carried across borders.

The name ROHRGERÜSTBAU traces back to 1949 in Berlin, where master scaffolder Christian Pronin learned the trade from the ground up — before founding ROHRGERÜSTBAU Pronin GmbH in Hamburg in 2021.

In 2009 Christian Pronin was on an international assignment in Tashkent (Uzbekistan) — travelling abroad to serve and advance the scaffolding craft on a professional level: sharing know-how, safety culture and German engineering standards far beyond Germany.

When scaffolding becomes architecture

Urbaneo — the young architecture centre.

For the Urbaneo – Junges Architektur Zentrum in Hamburg's HafenCity — a nationwide-unique interactive architecture centre for children and families (around 1,000 m², opened on 4 April 2025) — ROHRGERÜSTBAU built the bespoke, design-driven scaffold that turns the space itself into an exhibit: scaffolding as interior architecture.

Urbaneo is associated with the Berlin architect Rubén Jódar (Stiftung FREIZEIT; teaching at TU Berlin and Hochschule Wismar), who explores interior architecture with scaffolding. It is run by Kindermuseum Hamburg e.V. and supported by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, the ZEIT-Stiftung Bucerius and HafenCity Hamburg GmbH.
